President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), David Babachir Lawal and the Director General of the NIA, Ambassador Ayo Oke.
In their stead, the most senior Permanent Secretary in the SGF and NIA offices are to act during the period of investigation.
This was contained in a statement by the special adviser to the President on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the President also ordered an investigation into the allegations of violations of law and due process made against the SGF “in the award of contracts under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE).”
A full-scale investigation has been instituted into the discovery of large amounts of foreign and local currencies by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a residential apartment at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, over which the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has made a claim.
The investigation, among other duties, is to ascertain the means by which the NIA came into possession of such funds. The how and by whose authority such a large amount of money was made available to the NIA.
The investigation is to be conducted by a three-man committee headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo with the Hon. Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and the National Security Adviser as members.
