Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has assured Nigerians that the House would amend the 1999 constitution, which he believes is the only route to restructuring.
The speaker stated this on Wednesday at a public hearing organised by the Yussuff Lasun-led House Ad-hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.
The Ad-hoc Committee held the public hearing to collate stakeholders input on ”A bill for An Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to align with the proposals initiated by the Judiciary (HB858)”.
This process is coming at a time when there is loud chorus for the restructuring of Nigeria, especially from the Southern part of the country.
The South South/South East Governors had publicly declared their support for a restructured federal system, while the Social-Cultural group, Afenifere, has been championing the call in the South-West.
Agitations for restructuring of the governance framework for Nigeria can only be done through alterations of the constitution.
I wish to say, that the House of Representatives and indeed, the National Assembly, is ready to do its part in terms of amending the constitution, when consensus has been reached on any matter by stakeholders and Nigerian citizens.
