  • CAF Champions League (CAFCL) representatives Rivers United have moved closer to the group stage of the competition after they defeated visitors Al-Merreikh of ‎Sudan 3-0 in the first leg of the first round clash played at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

Ivorian import Guy Kuemian ‎was the star of the show as he netted a brace in the opening minutes of the game before Esosa Igbinoba added a third goal in the second goal. The 3-0 win gives Rivers United a healthy lead ahead of the second leg clash in Omdurman, Sudan on Saturday, March 18, 2017.

However, Nigeria’s second representative Enugu Rangers have a big mountain to climb after ‎they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Egyptian giants SC Zamalek in the first leg of their first round clash.

The 2016 CAF Champions League (CAFCL) finalists raced into a 3-0 first leg lead with Nigerian forward Stanley Ohawuchi getting the opener. Nigeria’s champion Rangers will have to scored at least three goals without conceding against their Egyptian opponents in the second leg slated for the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu on Sunday, February 19, 2017 to qualify for‎ the group stage of the competition.
